On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Have a secure knowledge and understanding of their subject/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for art, music, DT and PE. (Q14)
(2) Know and understand the relevant statutory and non-statutory frameworks including those provided through the national strategies for their subject/curriculum areas and other relevant initiatives applicable to the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach. (Q15)
Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
• To have knowledge and understanding of the requirements of art and design, music, PE and DT in the Early Learning Goals and the National Curriculum.
• To understand the key principles in teaching art and design, music, PE and DT. To have an overview of current issues with regard to these areas.
ART
The nature of art, imagination, responding to experiences, expressing and communicating ideas, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and assessing.
MUSIC
The nature of music, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and assessing.
GYMNASTICS and GAMES
The nature of PE, health and bodily awareness and using equipment, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and recording pupil performance, safety implications for the programmes of study covered.
DT
To understand the requirements of the National Curriculum for Design and Technology at Key stage 1
To model the process of planning, making and evaluating an artefact.
Developing an understanding of the knowledge, skills, techniques, resources and safety issues required for effective teaching and learning within the subject.
Sessions will be taught in practical workshop groups.
