PEDA191 - Developing and Learning (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) begin to understand the process of learning, including some of the key paradigms and their impact on educational practices (K1)
(2) begin to analyse complex situations concerning human learning and development in particular contexts, including their own learning (A1)

Content:

This module introduces theories about learning and development as they relate to teaching and learning in the classroom. The module will draw on the fields of:

- biology and neuroscience
- cognitive psychology
- socio-cultural studies
- pedagogy

Biology and neuroscience inform us about ways the brain is ‘hard-wired’ for learning. Cognitive psychology addresses environmental influences on development and learning. Socio-cultural studies point to the social, emotional and cultural influences on learning. Pedagogy highlights the connections between teaching and learning.
