PEDA171 - Early Childhood (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Communicate awareness of personal, social and emotional development of young children and its impact on early learning (K1)
(2) Explore a range of perceptions of childhood including media portrayals and global differences (T2) (K2)
(3) Demonstrate an understanding of how children develop and that progress is affected by a range of developmental, social, religious, ethnic, cultural and linguistic influences (Q18) (K1)

Content:

This module will include:
- Key theory related to social, emotional and physical development
- A range of perceptions of children including notions of childhood from different cultures and regions of the world
- How a child’s development may be affected by a range of influences including social conditions, parent’s economic situation, family education
- The range of religious, ethnic, cultural, linguistic and developmental differences between children in the UK

Research: students will consider how a researcher’s approach influences research method and outcome. Students will compare viewpoints and begin to use reading to support their arguments.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis. Time allocated to each is appropriate to the module delivered eg. P.E. all workshop; professional studies workshop 50%, tutorial 50%.
