PEDA162 - Teaching and Learning in the Foundation Stage 1 (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate secure knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach (Q14)
(2) demonstrate secure knowledge and understanding of the EYFS/QCA/DfEE Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage for communication, language and literacy development, Problem Solving, reasoning and Numeracy (Q15)

Content:

The CLL component of this module has several strands:

- An introduction to a broad and language-rich curriculum that develops children’s communication and literacy skills including: play, story, rhymes and drama informed by the Early Years Foundation Stage and renewed Primary Framework
- An introduction to the simple model of reading and the teaching of early reading: word recognition and language comprehension
- Emphasis on the systematic teaching of phonic knowledge, skills and understanding through the use of multi-sensory approaches
- Focus on the key features of simple narrative texts for beginning readers: grammatical and structural features
- Trainees are required to compose simple texts for beginning readers.
- Models of planning, teaching and assessment for formative purposes

The aim of the mathematical component of this module is to enable trainees to acquire knowledge and understanding of:

(1) the principles for Early Years education, areas of learning and the Early Learning Goals for mathematical development set out in the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage and Primary Framework for mathematics
(2) The development of the concept of number: counting, knowing and using number facts, calculating
(3) The structure and organization of learning in Foundation Stage. Consideration will be given to ways other than specific mathematical activities to support the development of number such as observing numbers and patterns in the environment and daily routines
(4) Planning for focused activities
(5) The development of the concepts of measures in young children
(6) To recognize that mathematical concepts develop through the other areas of learning
(7) To know how to plan the learning environment, activities and experiences to enable children to learn
(8) To know how to plan complete series of activities

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching methods will include weekly lectures, practical workshops and tutorials. A range of directed independent tasks will be set during the module.

001 Assignment: MD 1 x 2500 words 50%
