PEDA161 - Information and Communication Technology 1 (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Show a developing knowledge and understanding of ICT and related pedagogy in order to support teaching and learning in the EYFS and KS1 (Q14)
(2) Demonstrate a developing knowledge and understanding of the ELGs, the Primary Framework, the National Curriculum and how ICT is integral to these. Demonstrate a developing knowledge and understanding of QCA Schemes of Work for ICT (Q15) (T2)

Content:

(1) Audit of trainees’ pre-course experience, confidence and competence with ICT
(2) Introduction to the College ICT systems, protocols, email, internet access, file management and basic computer operations
(3) Develop trainees’ knowledge of Health and Safety, Legal, Ethical and Data Protection issues in relation to ICT ie be aware of national policies and guidance of the safe use of the world wide web
(4) Introduction to and familiarization with, the Early Learning Goals, the National Curriculum and QCA Scheme of Work for ICT
(5) Introduction to, and use of, appropriate technologies to support teaching and learning in the EYFS/KS1 areas of learning
(6) Introduction to the use of ICT to support early learning and the support of the Early Learning Goals and the Core subjects at KS1
(7) Use information Technology, including word processing, data bases, internet communication, information retrieval and on line searches
(8) Begin to acquire the skills in ICT and an understanding of how to use such skills to support their teaching and wider professional activities

Learning and Teaching Information:

Sessions will use a range of learning and teaching methods including peer tutoring, student presentations, tutor led demonstrations, individual and paired working.

Some sessions will take the form of a 3 part lesson ie:

- Introduction with session aims and objectives ( approximately 15/20 minutes)
- Trainee engagement in and development of, appropriate tasks. (approx. 1 hr 30 mins.)
- Plenary-feedback and identification of learning and next step.(approx. 15 mins.)

During the course of each session there will be tutor/trainee interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives.

There will be opportunities for discussion and reflection

On-going self evaluation will be part of the trainee’s identification of needs.

Course documentation, support materials and web based materials will be available on the VLE.
