PED5361 - Play and Early Learning

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Evaluate research related to the role and status of play in early learning and teaching (K1) (supporting Q10)
2. Examine theories of learning (R2,3)
3. Draw comparisons between the theoretical approaches and their experiences in school (K3)(R4)
4. Consider the role of play in assessing language, social, emotional and cognitive development (Q12)

Content:

The aim of this module is for students to explore the range of issues related to learning and the role and status of play in early learning including:
• The cultural aspects of play in the UK and other cultures
• Theories of learning eg. VAK, MI, left/right brained, boy/girl and the impact of this on early learning and teaching strategies
• Theories of cognitive development including Bruner, Piaget, Vygotsky and Gardner
• Comparing the theory to practical experiences in school and case studies
• Evaluating the role of play in the learning environment for social and emotional development
• Evaluating the use of play as an assessment tool
• Exploring reasons why individual children may find play difficult

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis. Time allocated to each is appropriate to the module delivered eg. P.E. all workshop; professional studies workshop 50%, tutorial 50%
