MFC4112 - Audiovisual Literacy

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how meaning is communicated through a range of audio-visual media-specific forms and texts.
2. demonstrate basic audio-visual literacy through analysis of a range of media images and texts;
3. demonstrate skills in group work and oral presentation;

Content:

This module examines how meaning, concepts and ideas are constructed through a range of media-specific visual forms and texts. It explores the visual codes and conventions used in ‘still’ media image production (eg. photographs, advertisements, film posters), the audio-visual codes and conventions employed in film and television production, and the auditory codes and conventions utilised in radio production. It centres on the formal and textual analysis of film, television, radio and media-related images and texts within a variety of cultural, institutional and theoretical contexts.

The module also enables students to practise, apply and review skills for group work and oral presentation.
