Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a systematic understanding of/and competences in applying feature values and treatments to news subjects for print and online publication
2 Identify and locate relevant specialised sources and ideas for features
3 Undertake research and interviews for feature material
4 Demonstrate independence, initiative and self-management in undertaking journalistic work
5 Produce the appropriate writing style, content and structure for in-depth feature articles

Content:

In this module students will be to apply and develop practical writing skills acquired at levels 1 and 2 to produce in-depth, researched feature articles. The module will look at how features have developed as a key area of content, the different ways in which feature writing is used by the news media and the different writing styles applicable in this format. This will be viewed in the context of both print and online publication.
Students will look at how ideas for features are sourced, how they are researched and how they are made distinct from news content covering the same subject areas. The emphasis is on understanding and developing practical skills in this area.

Additional assessment information

Portfolio 1 would normally include a 1,000-word feature on a general subject of the student’s choosing following discussion with tutors PLUS a 500-word blog written in advance analysing the research and interviews needed and the intended audience, AND a 500-word blog linked to the feature.

Portfolio 2 would normally include a 2,000 word feature or features for a double page spread EITHER on one particular subject with side panels, fact boxes and pic suggestions OR a selection of articles on a range of subjects, PLUS 500 words on a) how they would use the internet and social networking to research the subject(s) and b) expand the subject(s) to other platforms ie websites, video, twitter (ie what would they do and how)

Assessment:

001 Portfolio 1: 1 x 2000 word equiv 40%
002 Portfolio 2: 1 x 3000 word equiv 60%
