On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of key theory related to child development from birth to adulthood
2 Identify developmental milestones in personal, emotional, physical and cognitive development
3 Consider ways in which development may be delayed due to circumstances, illness etc.
4 Assess the development of children, young people or adults within their work setting and make informed observations.
This module introduces students to a range of relevant development theory related to personal, social, physical and cognitive development in children 0 to adulthood. Key milestones are identified and debated from the various theoretical perspectives.
The module will include a study of:
• Factors that can inhibit development
• Beginning to identify developmental delay
• How to observe those with whom they work and make judgments about their developmental stage and needs.
Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
