FSL4512 - Teaching Swimming

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate understanding of the aims and content of swimming taught in school across the key stages.
2 Write a clear statement of progression and set appropriate targets for a unit of work.
3 Plan and construct progressive swimming lessons with clear learning objectives, learning activities, teaching points, safety issues, progressive targets.
Observe performance and give corrective feedback.
4 Understand and demonstrate the principles of differentiation and progression in the teaching of swimming.
5 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues relating to the teaching of swimming.

Content:

National Curriculum Programme of Study Key Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4
Practical teaching in Primary and secondary PE Swimming
Teaching methods: health and safety, teaching points, observation, demonstration, organisation, positioning, feedback
Lesson planning and unit planning, monitoring and assessment, differentiation and progression targets
Monitoring pupil progress, Assessment of Learning, Assessment for Learning.
Awareness of Resources
Developmental Stages – identifying needs and possible factors affecting physical and cognitive development.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures are accompanied by practical teaching workshops and seminars.

Assessment:

001 Practical Teaching and written report 45 mins & 750 words 30%
002 Investigative project 1 x 3000 words 70%
