FSL4082 - Communication and Literacy

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. explain the importance of talk in literacy learning;
2. show how relevant research influences the teaching of literacy;
3. identify a range of strategies for supporting communication and literacy skills including strategies for those who have English as an additional language;
4. audit and reflect on the key skills involved in being a good communicator and listener;
5. use the content of the Curriculum Guidance and National Strategies for literacy relevant to their work with the internet as a key source of information.

Content:

The module will be theoretical and practical and will draw on the participants' own experience and knowledge to develop knowledge and understanding. Sessions will include:

The role of speaking and listening in literacy learning.
Strategies for supporting literacy in the classroom, including the role of drama.
The key skills involved in good communication and listening.
Supporting bilingual pupils in the classroom.
The use of appropriate ICT to support the development of literacy.
The National Curriculum, National Literacy Strategy and Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Level 4 modules will provide a foundation level of knowledge and understanding of supported learning. In addition to the required subject knowledge, the modules will introduce students to key skills and enable them to develop the necessary academic skills.
Students will be introduced to pair work as a key learning strategy.

The sessions in this module will demand students to reflect on their own effectiveness in terms of supporting literacy and identify areas where effectiveness can be improved. This will include completion of a personal action plan for T2 & T3 in the students Personal Development Plan.

This module will run over 6 weeks.
