On completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Demonstrate an understanding of theory related to cognitive development and learning
(2) Draw upon different perspectives of early childhood and learning to critically evaluate effective pedagogy drawing on a range of theoretical and practical examples including the use of ICT
(3) Evaluate the effectiveness of the new Early Years Foundation Stage in addressing the needs of young children including analysis of relevant data
(4) Reflect on issues related to transition from home to school and from foundation stage to key stage 1
This module introduces students to a range of relevant theory related to cognitive development and learning. Students are also expected to reflect upon issues related to transition to school including separation, socialization, play, communication and transition from foundation stage to key stage 1. This module will include consideration of QTS standards related to planning, teaching and evaluating.
• Relevant constructivist theory of knowledge acquisition and learning
• Learning and teaching strategies appropriate for the 0-8 year age range
• The Foundation Stage curriculum and Key Stage 1 National Curriculum and related strategies
• Contemporary issues related to early learning eg. Early reading, phonics, play based curriculum, ICT
Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate skills in planning for learning using relevant documentation, objectives and strategies
Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
