ENG6942 - Writing & Performance for Children & Young People

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1) Demonstrate understanding of the role of writing and performance for children and young people
2)Create original, effective and imaginative written texts and / or performance pieces for children and young people and demonstrate enhanced creative and critical thinking in these areas of practice.
3) Carry out research appropriate to the effective completion of particular writing and performance-related tasks.
4) Analyse and evaluate the ethical, social, creative and technical issues raised by particular writing and performance tasks in relation to a young audience/readership.

Content:

In Semester 1 students will complete a portfolio of original written texts and performance tasks designed to: (1) develop and expand their creative writing and performance-related skills across a range of work aimed at children and young people; (2) develop their understanding of, and versatility in writing and performing for readers, audiences and participants in the different age groups, from early readers, through 8+, 12+ and up to and including Young Adults; (3) develop their critical self-awareness as practitioners along with an understanding of the relationship between genre, register and form.

In Semester 2 students will develop an element of their Semester 1 work towards completion of their particular project, formulated in consultation with the tutor(s). Each student will research and produce an original imaginative written text or performance piece aimed at children and young people in one of the age categories described above. Students will also reflect on the literary, theatrical, ethical, cultural, social or other issues raised by the production of their creative work.

Throughout the module students will be encouraged to relate their work to the understanding and experienced gained on their Level 2 Professional Development and Placement module and to the creative and critical modules studied at Levels 1 and 2.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning and teaching methods will combine seminars, creative-writing workshops, performance workshops and self-directed reading, writing and performance tasks. Peer feedback and tutor feedback on writing and performance exercises will be given throughout the year.
