On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Demonstrate competence as a writer and speaker, using a variety of forms and genres, for different purposes and audiences
(2) Analyse examples of language use, applying a range of linguistic concepts and terms
(3) Carry out and report on a small linguistic research project
(4) Evaluate their own communication skills and edit their written work to improve its effectiveness and accuracy to the standard specified by the QCA for Communication Skills Level 3
During Semester 1 students will consolidate their knowledge about language by learning, through a series of practical exercises, to apply a range of linguistic concepts and terms to the analysis of language use, taking context and genre into account as appropriate. Concepts and terms will be cross-referenced to examples of how children learn to use language. Towards the end of the semester students will work on group research projects which they will then write up individually.
During Semester 2 students will continue to add to the portfolio of exercises they completed during Semester 1. They will complete a series of exercises to develop their writing and editing skills; this will include revising and correcting their research report from Semester 1; also some creative writing exercises. Towards the end of the semester students will work towards completion of an oral presentation, simulating a meeting to demonstrate their communication and group work skills and then reviewing a video of their performance.
The emphasis throughout the module will be on development of the transferable skills of communication, analysis, group work and improvement of own performance specified in the programme objectives designated (T).
A variety of different methods will be used, which may include: tutor presentation, group discussion, completion of exercises, informal presentation by students. Video will be used to review the presentations towards the end of Semester 2.
