EDS5012 - Historical Development of Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Outline the development of educational systems and practices from 1800 to the present.
2. Evaluate key educational debates through recent educational history.
3. Debate key opposing viewpoints and evaluate outcomes.

Content:

In this module students will be expected to trace key educational developments regarding legislative and strategic approaches to education. They will make connections between key events and resulting educational priorities eg. Victoria Climbie and Every Child Matters in 2002/3.

Key themes include:
- Compulsory school age changes
- Vocational and academic education provision
- Secondary comprehensive and private/public education
- Key curricula strategies and National Curriculum developments
- Education Acts
- Post compulsory education.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
