CYP5042 - Research Methods

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Consider key debates in research methodology, including ethical issues;
2 Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research approaches;
3 Design a research proposal based on research knowledge and understanding.

Content:

In this module students will be expected to engage with debate related to quantitative and qualitative research methodology and their relationship with education.
Key themes will include:
• Exploring research methods for qualitative and quantitative approaches;
• Providing opportunities to have a go at designing research methods;
• Exploring how to design, conduct, analyse and write up research projects;
• Consideration of ethical issues in research.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.
