CYP5032 - Pedagogy, Practice and Frameworks

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Evaluate a range of perspectives on early childhood education;
2 Analyse the effectiveness and impact of current curriculum guidance in early years settings;
3 Plan a series of learning experiences for young children.

Content:

This module will develop the students’ understanding of the Early Years curriculum from birth to 5. Students will be expected to research how effectively the curriculum has been applied in a range of early years settings.
Students will be expected to critically analyse a range of perspectives and approaches to early years education, eg. Reggio Emilia, Scandinavian approaches, Steiner, Montessori, etc.
Students will be introduced to the key elements of the areas of learning and begin to plan learning episodes which could be used in an Early Years setting.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

001 Planning exercise 1 X 1 1,000-word equivalent (Mid-module) 30%
002 Report 1 x 3,000 words (End of module) 70%
