CYP5012 - Theories and Experiments from Binet to Today

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale behind education systems, institutions and strategies;
2 Evaluate the impact of theories and practices;
3 Identify and compare key themes and theories;
4 Consider current debates and issues in education.

Content:

The module is characterised by its thematic approach to competing theories and practices. Theories and practices will incorporate state-funded schooling and alternatives. The module draws upon philosophical, socio-historical, sociological and psychological perspectives.
Students will explore themes such as the purposes of education, access to education, teaching methods, teacher-pupil relations and definitions of educational success.
The module will set contemporary theories and practices within their historical context.
Illustrative topics include meritocracy, education’s role in moral development, development/ assessment of intelligence(s), debates surrounding ‘progressive’ education and selection/ comprehensivisation.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminars or workshops.

001 Essay 2,000 words (Mid-module) 50%
002 Analysis of documentation 1 x 2,000 words (End of module) 50%
