CYP4002 - History of Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Understand how legislation has shaped contemporary education;
2 Identify key changes and continuities within education history and evaluate their contemporary relevance;
3 Recognise alternative perspectives.

Content:

In this module students will trace key educational developments in legislation, organisation, curriculum and culture. The module will encompass state-funded education, private education and alternative education.
Illustrative themes include:
Continuity and change within key legislation and its impact upon access, organisation and content;
Institutions, organisations and structure, eg. elementary school, primary school, the tripartite system, comprehensives, co-education, public schools;
Cultural change, eg. discipline, choice, dress, pupil/student participation;
Alternative histories, eg. free schools, home schooling.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will be taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, some of which will be student-led. Students could be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities.
Students may be required to prepare and present brief presentations as the basis for discussion in seminar or workshops.

002 Briefing Paper 1 x 2000 words (end of module) 50%
