CHY6022 - Research Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate the ability to design an original research project having regard to principles of good design and ethics;
(2) Demonstrate the ability to search and analyse the literature in a specified area;
(3) Demonstrate the ability to collect and analyse empirical research data;
(4) Demonstrate the ability to assess and evaluate critically different types of evidence;
(5) Write a research report in an appropriate style.

Content:

This module provides an opportunity for students to complete an original investigation into an area of the course which is of particular interest to them. It forms the culmination of the various research methods to which students have been introduced in preceding modules, especially CHY 2032, ‘Introduction to evidence-based learning’. There will be, therefore, a requirement to identify an area of inquiry for the purposes of investigation. They will carry out a selected literature review to inform the investigation. The research will be designed according to relevant principles with due consideration to ethical concerns. An appropriate means of gathering evidence will be used to further the inquiry. The research in progress will be presented to peers. A final report will comprise a comprehensive account of the review of relevant literature, methods used, findings and an evaluation of the project.
