BAM5012 - Human Resource Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) explain and assess the role of the personnel/ HRM specialist in organisations
(2) evaluate the effectiveness of human resource management policies and practices and reflect on ethical issues they raise.
(3) construct written and oral arguments using scholarly resources in relation to problems and issues in human resource management.
(4) work independently and as a member of a group.

Content:

Contextual issues: the evolution of personnel management and HRM; the policy framework for HRM; HRM and ethical issues; changing employment patterns and labour markets. HRM policy areas: recruitment strategies; selection processes and techniques; job analysis and job design theories; pay and reward policies; training and its effectiveness in the workplace; management development and employee development; evaluating performance. The future of HRM: the management of employee relations; the changing role of trade unions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered by a core of weekly lectures supported by the organisation of students into seminar groups. The groups will be divided into teams to lead two seminars dedicated to the analysis of issues related to the content of the course. All students will be expected to prepare for all seminars and participate in the discussions. The seminars will involve students working in groups to research, prepare and present their findings; thereby enhancing their research, group working, communication and presentation skills and their ability to argue a case orally. The aim is to promote deep learning of knowledge and understanding of HRM practice and issues.

001 Assessed essays 2x1500 words (during & end Sem 1) 50%
