On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) explain the main features of the business environment of developed market economies and the factors influencing that environment;
(2) use computer software packages to organize, present and manipulate quantitative data referring to the economic and business environment;
(3) identify the main features of modern business organisation and functions and explain their development over time;
(4) explain the impact of the internationalisation of economic activity on business and explain the development of multinational business activity;
(5) identify and describe the impact of government on the business sector especially in relation to industrial and competition policy;
(6) conduct small scale research into a particular industry or business and present their findings in the form of a case study.
An overview of European economic history since 1850. The development of the UK economy since 1945; the impact of economic change on the business environment.
The growth and development of modern business; the changing economic and industrial structure of the UK; business size, structure and organisation. The development of business functions including production, marketing, and finance.
International business development: the impact on UK business of American and Japanese business styles and organisation; the growth of multinational business enterprises. Government and business; the public and private sectors; industrial strategy, regulation and competition policy.
Delivery will be by a core of weekly lectures designed to introduce the main issues related to the content and objectives of the module, and a weekly small group tutorial. The tutorials will operate to a common programme. This will consist of specified reading and tasks, and will also provide student-centred activities designed to develop relevant presentational skills.
