On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 distinguish in legal and financial terms between a sole trader, a partnership, a private limited company, and a public limited company;
2 analyse the nature of the different sources of finance available to business organisations, and the rewards and costs associated with each;
3 prepare and interpret a range of simple financial accounting statements;
4 analyse the reaction of costs and profits to changes in the volume of activity within a business;
5 analyse and calculate the elements of cost incurred in producing a product or completing a job;
6 explain the nature of and the terminology related to a range of financial markets;
7 complete simple calculations relating to the pricing of a range of financial securities;
8 use a computer spreadsheet to prepare relevant financial statements.
Forms of business: sole trader, partnership, private and limited companies. The nature of equity and debt finance. Cash flow forecasts, simple profit & loss accounts, the accounting equation, the nature of profit, simple balance sheets. Cost behaviour, break-even analysis, break-even charts, marginal cost statements. Total unit costs, simple absorption costing. Introduction to financial markets. Introduction to asset pricing. Using spreadsheets.
The module will be delivered via a series of weekly one-hour whole-group interactive lectures supported by weekly one-hour small group tutorial / workshop sessions. Questions / exercises will be set at each lecture meeting for students to complete before the associated small group session. Students will be provided with, and /or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions / exercises to support their progress through the module material. Additional workshop time will be provided for students needing extra practice with a computer spreadsheet.
