SHN6612 - Nutrition and Health Policies

Objectives:

On completion of the module students will be able to demonstrate:

(1) a critical appraisal of key recommendations of government reports;
(2) comprehension of the background and rationale for nutrition and health policy;
(3) understanding of the implementation of strategies developed to address requirements of health policy;
(4) knowledge of health needs throughout the lifecycle.

Content:

National perspectives on health strategies and their implementation. Focus on sub populations including, the elderly, school children, infants, pregnant and lactating mothers. Approaches to high risk behaviour e.g. drinking, smoking, overeating. Consideration of policies at local and national level concerning cardiovascular vascular disease, cancer, obesity and other metabolic disorders. Surveillance and epidemiology.
