SHN5732 - Leisure Facility Analysis/Lifestyle Research

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:\

(1) consider the ways in which analysis of facilities may inform management and fulfill the needs of the leisure market;
(2) relate the general principles of sound management practice to the specific requirements of leisure and health facilities;
(3) evaluate features of facility management, using a case study approach;
(4) demonstrate knowledge of social and cultural factors affecting participation in leisure activities;
(5) make a critical appraisal of the role of leisure and lifestyle across life stages;
(6) work within a group to conduct a research project targeting a particular aspect of leisure and lifestyle

Content:

1) identification of the range of leisure and health facilities and their role and function within contemporary society;
(2) general and specific characteristics of leisure and health facilities, sports, community, arts venues and multi-use venues;
(3) the analytical process: frameworks and tools with application to site visit;
(4) social and cultural factors that affect leisure participation and how these change with lifestage;
(5) conduct small-scale, group-based, research project into leisure lifestyle.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Semester 1 is primarily lecture-based, although there is an individual site visit and report-back on a SWOT analysis. Semester 2 involves small group work investigating a particular aspect of leisure lifestyle, tutorial support is on-going to facilitate the groups being able to present their findings to their peers at the end of the semester.
