SHL5492 - Primary Swimming and Health Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate understanding of the aims and content of swimming taught in primary school at key stage 1 & 2;
2 Plan and construct progressive swimming lessons with clear teaching objectives, tasks, teaching points, safety issues, progressive targets, observation and feedback;
3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationships between fitness, physical activity and health;
4 Evaluate the epidemiological evidence linking coronary heart disease and physical activity;
5 Appraise the contributions of fitness assessment and exercise prescription to health

Content:

National Curriculum Programme of Study Key Stages 1 & 2
Practical teaching in Primary PE Swimming
Teaching methods: risk assessment and safety, teaching points, observation, demonstration, organisation, positioning, feedback
Lesson planning and unit planning, monitoring and assessment, differentiation and progression targets
Health, fitness and physical activity and their relationship with hypokinetic disease. Epidemiological evidence linking coronary heart disease and physical activity.
Risk factors for coronary heart disease. Utility of exercise prescription and fitness assessment.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Total student contact time = 42 hours. Independent study will be approximately 100 hours made up of reading, data collection, preparation for tutorials, workshops and seminars.
