SHL5422 - Youth, Leisure & Lifestyle

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate knowledge of social and cultural factors affecting young people’s participation in leisure activities
(2) Make a critical appraisal of the role of leisure and lifestyle within the transitions of childhood and youth
(3) Work within a group to conduct a research project targeting a particular aspect of leisure and lifestyle for young people

Content:

In this module, students will consider definitions of leisure and lifestyle. In particulare the role these play within childhood and youth. This includes identity construction and exploring roles within the period of transition from child to adolescent and from adolescent to young adult. Issues of autonomy, authority and peer pressure will be considered in the context of duty of care and child protection. The appearance of rebellion, rejection and conflict during these lifestages will be instrumental in informing student understanding.

Learning and Teaching Information:

In semester one the module will be delivered by means of lectures and tutorials. In Semester two the learning and teaching will be achieved through workshops and seminars. Independent research will be expected in both seminars.
