SHL5372 - Sport Psychology and Coaching

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Critically appraise the psychological factors, which affect individual, group and team performance in sport;
(2) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theories of learning and tasks, learner and coach factors affecting learning;
(3) Critically evaluate practice methods and coaching styles;
(4) Plan, deliver and evaluate a series of coaching sessions for a selected physical activity and assess and account for their own learning of selected physical activity;

Content:

Psychological factors affecting performance and learning: Anxiety; Confidence, Aggression.
Factors affecting learning; task, learner and coach characteristics;
Role of the Coach: Planning; objective setting; session structure; coaching style’ evaluation.
Designing practice: guidance; whole vs. part; mental practice; distribution of practice; blocked vs. random and variable vs. constant practice.
Ethical Considerations: the coach-performer relationship; inclusive and equitable practice; Sports Coach UK code of sports ethics.
Planning and conducting a series of coaching sessions.
