SHL5332 - Physiology of Training 1 / Community Fitness

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an understanding of physiological changes which occur with regular exercise;
(2) utilise physiological training principles in the planning of training programmes;
(3) Demonstrate oral presentation skills.
(4) evaluate the physiological validity of commercial fitness programmes;
(5) evaluate the quality of health and fitness facilities, classes and instructors;
(6) plan and teach a circuit training class, an exercise to music class or conduct a weights room induction.

Content:

Principles of training and their applications to training for endurance, speed, strength, flexibility. Physiological adaptations and biochemical adaptations to training, supercompensation, overreaching, infection and recovery. Maximal oxygen uptake, oxygen debt, deficit, lactate threshold/minimum and onset of blood lactate accumulation. Utility of fitness tests. Review of guidelines for exercise prescription. Fitness and health screening: special concerns eg. asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, young and third age participants. Evaluation of commercial programmes and quality instruction. Circuit training, exercise to music and resistance training.
