SHL4442 - Sports History

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. develop knowledge of key debates surrounding the social and cultural development of sport, and how these inform contemporary sport.
2. understand how to ‘read sports history’ with use of primary and secondary resources.
3. demonstrate an awareness of the key historical developments of the twentieth century.
4. show an understanding of how these events have shaped the modern world.
5. discuss long term processes of change and stability.
6. give a brief presentation with aid of powerpoint software (or equivalent).

Content:

This module, in semester 1, takes an overview of the history of the world in the twentieth century. It explores a number of themes in the history of the last century, such as the balance of power and the world order; the rise of ideological conflict and the cold war; war, its nature and impact, international organisations and the world order, the global environment, globalisation and global culture.

In semester 2, the module introduces students to some of the main themes and issues within the history of modern British sport (such as amateurism and the reational recreation movement). Students will develop an appreciation of the significance of understanding sports history and how this informs contemporary sport. Studentrs will develop an awareness of the resources available to them and how to approach primary and secondary resources.
