SHL4382 - Psychology/Physiology of Sport

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) classify sporting activities and analyse the information processing demands of sporting activities;
(2) demonstrate an understanding of a range of factors which influence sports performance;
(3) critically evaluate the process of talent selection;
(4) apply their theoretical knowledge to practical examples;
(5) demonstrate an understanding of the neuro-muscular systems and energy metabolism;
(6) demonstrate an understanding of the functions of the respiratory and cardio-vascular systems during exercise and recovery;

Content:

Definitions of skill and ability and systems of skill classification
Information processing models of motor performance
Factors affecting performance, e.g. Arousal, confidence
Measurement of performance and evaluation of the talent prediction process
Practical exemplars from contrasting sporting activities
Structure and function of the musculo-skeletal system. Energy metabolism during exercise
The respiratory system, endocrine system and the haemodynamic response to exercise
Research report writing style and format
