On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Analyse critically sources of knowledge and evidence relevant to professional practice
2 Interpret statistical data and analyse how that relates to their own students’ attainment, aspirational targets and progress
3 Analyse professional development needs and to identify and undertake a small scale critical enquiry
4 Explore the implications for future practice and critically reflect on professional learning gained
• The nature of professional learning development, reflective practice and the wider professional context.
• A critical analysis of evidence: nature and practice issues
• Identifying sources of evidence appropriate to the development of professional practice,
• Approaches to educational research and principles for identifying possible foci,
• Action enquiry concepts and issues including analysis of data in schools, the relationship between “evidence” and research/enquiry subject-matter, synthesising ideas and the identification of key messages from research findings
• Planning, undertaking, managing and critically evaluating a school-based enquiry risk management and ethics in school-based enquiry,
• Identification of implications for own practice and further professional development needs.
Summer/Autumn year 1
The module will be delivered in a range of ways including; workshops, tutorials, tutor led input, coaching from school-based colleagues, flexible learning materials, electronic support including VLE-based materials, email and computer conferencing, a required presentation of the critical enquiry to school-based colleagues whose feedback will inform the assessed report.
