On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate the principles of mentoring and coaching and relevant research into its effectiveness
2. Debate theory related to behaviour patterns, their origin and the motivation of children, young people and adults to behave in a certain way
3. Examine their own role and workplace and critically review the use of counselling, mentoring and coaching techniques with clients and as part of their professional development
4. Plan for intervention with an individual using the principles of mentoring and coaching and evaluate the potential effectiveness of the approaches
This taught module reviews research evidence related to the principles of mentoring and coaching and the effectiveness of mentoring approaches in practice. It will consider theories related to behaviour, deviance and counselling.

• Behaviour theory and deviance
• Analysis of case studies related to interventions with children, young people and adults using mentoring approaches
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
