On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Analyse circumstances in which drug use can become abuse
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the physical, social and emotional impact of the use of common medicines and drugs
3. Evaluate the social implications of drug use and attitudes to the use of key medicines and drugs
4. Analyse the legality of the use of certain drugs, the implications of drug misuse and the services and strategies available for rehabilitation.
In this module students will engage with the scientific understanding of the impact of certain medicines and drugs as well as the legal, social and support issues including:
- Social pressures and how these relate to drug use eg. Stress, lack of work, poverty, anti social behaviour
- Attitudes to the use of certain drugs eg Ritalin, anti depressants, as well as illegal drugs
- Statistics related to the use of key medicines and drugs and the demographics related to those who use them
- Implications for the individual and their families of drug abuse
- Strategies for rehabilitation.
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
