On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe differences in cultural and social perspectives on play
Identify key theoretical perspectives on play, the language of play and the role of play in learning
Evaluate their own setting in light of good practice in Early Years practice
Explain the importance of building relationships with young children and evaluate how they do this in their setting
In this module students relate a range of relevant play theory to their own experiences in their setting and develop an understanding of how to create an effective environment to nurture play opportunities.
The module will include a study of:
Related theory including from a range of cultural and social perspectives
Toys and how they relate to development, stereotyping, role-play, learning etc.
Observations of children at play and how these can inform about a childs social, personal, physical and cognitive development
The language of play
Nurturing activities and relationships
Building relationships with young children
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
