On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Express an awareness of the key principles and elements of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum
2. Evaluate the developments that have taken place in early education in recent history and the theoretical perspectives that underpin them
3. Debate the contemporary issues related to the creation of early learning curricula and its impact on those who work with very young children
4. Plan a series of learning experiences for very young children
This module will develop the students’ understanding of the Early Years curriculum from birth to 5. Students will be expected to research how the curriculum has developed over a period of time and relate this to their theoretical understanding of child development and early learning.
Students will be introduced to the key elements of the areas of learning and begin to plan learning episodes which could be used in an Early Years setting.
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
