PEY4042 - Play and the Early Years Environment

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of play in early development and learning
2. Describe differences in cultural and social perspectives on play
3. Identify key theoretical perspectives on play, the language of play and the role of play in learning
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the ideal physical environment for young children in a range of settings
5. Explain the importance of building relationships with young children and how this can be achieved in a range of circumstances including family, nursery, school etc.

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of relevant theory related to play and creating an effective early years environment.

The module will include a study of:
• Related theory including a range of cultural and social perspectives
• Toys and how they relate to development, stereotyping, role play, learning, etc.
• Observations of children at play and how these can inform about a child’s social, personal, physical and cognitive development
• The language of play
• Nurturing activities and relationships
• Building relationships with young children

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.

001 Activity plan and session presentation 1500 word equiv. & 10 min group presentation (Sem 1) 50%
