PEY4032 - Health, Safety and Welfare

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Review statistical data related to children’s health, diet and welfare
2. Express an awareness of the roles and responsibilities of Early Years practitioners in ensuring young children’s health, safety and welfare
3. Evaluate information available to families related to health, welfare and safety
4. Review a range of research case studies and media portrayals of young children’s health, safety and welfare

Content:

Within this module students will be expected to analyse a range of statistical data related to local and national figures for young children’s health, diet, growth and welfare. Students will review information available to families via internet, paper publications, television etc. in relation to government guidelines and relevant professional bodies.

The module will include a study of:
• National and local information related to children’s health, safety and welfare
• Legislation, policies and strategies for promoting the health, safety and welfare of young children
• Case studies related to health, safety and welfare involving multi agency working
• How early years practitioners work together across the health, social care and education fields to ensure children’s safety and welfare

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
