PEY4022 - Working with Families and Carers

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Reflect on the experience families and carers may have raising young children.
2. Begin to evaluate effective and ineffective communication between professionals and families.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of the skills required to work with families and carers in a range of Early Years settings.
4. Review the information available about young children including information relating to progress, health, welfare, personal circumstances and incidents and how to use the information to gain a greater understanding of young children and their families.

Content:

This module enables students to draw together information and experiences related to family circumstances and interactions with families. During the course of the module students will be expected to reflect on effective communication with families and how circumstances may influence interactions with families.

The module will include a study of:

  • Case studies of family interactions with children's services.

  • Reports and logs of communication with families.

  • Legislation related to the rights of parents and carers in relation to provision for their child
  • .

    Learning and Teaching Information:

    Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
