PEY4012 - The Unique Child: my world and me

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of theory related to the development of an individual's personality and characteristics.
2. Identify factors in a child's life that influence their personality, behaviour, self awareness and self esteem.
3. Begin to analyse relevant research and case study evidence related to this field.
4. Describe ways in which a diverse range of children develop self concept and how they interact with the world around them.

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of relevant theory related to personal development, the development of personality, self awareness, self esteem and identity in children 0 - 8 years.

The module will include a study of:

  • Relevant theory related to the personal, social and emotional development of young children.

  • Influences on a child's personality, behaviour and identity; how they understand the world around them and how they relate to it.

  • How to accommodate diverse needs and personalities within the childcare and educational setting.

  • Learning and Teaching Information:

    Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
