PEH4502 - Themes and Issues in Physical Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an awareness of current and potential sport development opportunities in the school and community for young people
(2) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of Physical Education provision on the health and well-being of children
(3) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the requirements of Special Educational Needs Pupils within Physical Education.
(4) Demonstrate an awareness of Cross-Curricular Themes within Physical Education
(5) Identify a range of approaches to assessment within Physical education
(6) Know how to make effective personalised learning for those they teach
(7) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Physical Education and related pedagogy to enable effective teaching to take place.

Content:

The module will be covered through a thematic approach which gives an overview of key issues within Physical Education.

Sport Development

• The PESSCL Strategy and its implications.
• Knowledge of and understanding of implementation strategies in order to achieve 2 hours of High Quality Physical Education
• Knowledge of the key partners working Nationally and within the local community
• The School Sports Co-ordinator Partnerships
• Knowledge and understanding of event organization and planning
• The implications and potential use of coaches and adults other than teachers to supplement the physical education curriculum. The Step into Sport Scheme.
Special Educational Needs and Special Populations within P.E.

• The nature of disability; appropriate approaches to disability within Physical Education; the needs of Special Educational Needs pupils in Physical Education
• Knowledge of adapted and differentiated physical activities and P.E. provision for children with special needs
Healthy Children / Healthy Schools

• demonstrate knowledge of the social and cultural factors affecting young people’s participation in sport and leisure activities
• an critical appraisal of a selection of initiatives from relevant government and non-government agencies concerned with sport and leisure provision for young people in Britain
• The health needs of young people and the influence of a range of agents and agencies on health behaviour
• National Curriculum Guidance and government-led health promotion initiatives
• Patterns of participation and strategies to increase participation e.g. active playgrounds.
• The role of the school and physical education in developing positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity in young children
• Motivation and preventing drop out from physical activity
• Evaluation of curriculum resource packs
• Socio-cultural factors affecting children’s participation in physical activity

Diversity, Cross-curricular themes and Issues in PE

• The role of Physical Education in the development of the whole child: social, moral, cultural education
• Cross-curricular themes within other core and foundation subjects
• Personalised learning through using a variety of styles and methods
• Health and Safety procedures with regard Physical Education
• PE, Fitness and Health
• Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting and Accountability within Physical Education. • Breadth, Balance, Progression and Continuity
