On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Demonstrate familiarity with and make links between the values and aims of the National Curriculum and the programmes of study for citizenship and Personal, social and health education and how these relate to other areas of the curriculum
(2) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of strategies for behaviour management, critically evaluate their use and be able to adapt them for personal learner needs.
(3) Reflect on a range of factors related to an effective learning environment and apply the knowledge gained to specific practical situations
(4) To discuss their own learning needs and how this knowledge informs their professional development and practice.
The course consolidates and extends further those areas introduced in level 1a. It will lay the foundations for studying the education of pupils with SEN at level 3a. Where possible links will be made to the content of the core and non-core curriculum.
• To introduce the SBT assessment procedures and requirements for level 1b and to review the level 1a placement.
• An introduction to the SEN code of practice, responsibilities of the class-teacher. Planning to meet individual needs. An introduction to IEPS.
• Pupils with E,B,S difficulties –developing further the range of behaviour management strategies introduced in level 1a.
• Bullying in school- strategies to prevent and combat bullying
• Curriculum content related to PSHCE. Cross-curricular approaches to planning related to PSHE/citizenship.
• National and school initiatives related to PSHCE
• Working within a team. The effective management and use of teaching assistants. Principles of research in schools.
• Personal learner needs- developing study skills, teacher development plan.
In relation to each of the above areas, students will be introduced to a range of research findings and Government initiatives. They will begin to evaluate the content of some of these and the approaches used in carrying out the research.
Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning, to reflect those utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as a whole group, small group, pair or individually. Learning will be supported by reading materials provided in Study and CLARCS packs and via online learning. Assignments and tasks will be scaffolded.
