PEDB342 - English, Maths and DT (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate a developing knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach
(2) Demonstrate understanding of the relevant statutory and non-statutory curricula and frameworks; specifically the National Curriculum for Mathematics and the Primary Framework for Mathematics.\
(3) Design opportunities for learners to develop their numeracy and ICT skills.

Content:

The module has a number of key strands.First, it introduces reading comprehension and writing composition related to non-narrative texts in the later years. Extended units of work whose content is related to subjects/areas of the curriculum other than English are demonstrated. A variety of interactive teaching and learning strategies, techniques, routines and resources - within which speaking and listening is woven - are demonstrated and evaluated. Each non-narrative text-type is analysed with regard to the ways in which its purpose and audience determine its structural and grammatical features.\\ Second, poetry is the focus of units of work in which groups of poems share a common theme.\\ Third, there are opportunities for students to evaluate a variety of multi-media texts and resources extending links with ICT. Students are required to design, compose and evaluate their own multi-media information texts such that they demonstrate mastery of key grammatical and structural features. There will also be an investigation into children’s out-of-school literacy lives with particular reference to children’s experiences with digital technologies.

Fourthly, models of planning and assessment for formative purposes are demonstrated in preparation for school-based training.

Consideration of 2d and 3d shape, reflective and rotational symmetry, transformations, co-ordinates, tessellations, angles, congruence and similarity and aspects of geometric proof. Use of ICT.
i. Develop personal knowledge of the science content: electricity and magnetism, light and sound
ii. Develop personal knowledge of design and technology: developing, planning and communicating ideas, knowledge and safe use of tools, materials and components, evaluation of products and processes
iii. Knowledge of the National Curriculum for Design and Technology and associated professional language.
iv. The role of the National Curriculum and medium term planning.
