PEDB321 - Languages for Learning (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Begin to demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of MFL pedagogy to enable them to teach a language other than English effectively across
(2) Begin to know and understand the KS2 Framework for Languages

Content:

The aim of this module is to enable trainees to acquire knowledge and understanding of:
• The KS2 Framework for Languages (2005) rationale for teaching languages to young learners
• The approach to language teaching and learning in KS2 “which stresses opportunities for learners to interact with the language” p.5
• Ways in which to provide opportunities for learners to interact with the new language, such as:
- Through regular routines: using greetings, numbers, games, and pictures
- Songs and drama
- Listening to familiar stories
- Links with other subjects

Learning and Teaching Information:

The cohort will be divided into three groups and follow a ten week programme in Spanish, German or French. Teaching will be mainly through lectures and workshops.
