PEDB212 - National Curriculum Core: English, Mathematics and Science (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach (Q14)
(2) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of English: the National Curriculum for England; the Primary National Strategy set out in the Primary Framework for literacy at Key Stage 1 (Q15) (A1) Begin to know and understand the national Curriculum for England and the Primary Framework for Science and Maths (Q15)

Content:

The English component of the module has several strands:
• An introduction to a language-rich curriculum that develops children’s communication and literacy skills including: role-play, drama, story informed by the renewed Primary Framework
• An introduction to the simple model of the reading process and the teaching of early reading at Key Stage 1: word recognition and reading fluency
• Emphasis on the systematic teaching of phonic knowledge, skills and understanding through the use of multi-sensory approaches.
• Focus on a range of contexts for promoting language and reading comprehension including shared reading, guided reading and individual reading. Strong emphasis on guided reading in an instructional context.
• Focus on the key features of traditional stories related to their grammatical and structural features in book and multi-media format
• Trainees are required to compose narrative texts for Key Stage 1 children
• Models of planning, teaching and assessment for formative purposes

The aim of the maths element of the module is to enable trainees to acquire knowledge and understanding of:

• The curriculum for mathematics in the National Curriculum and the Primary Framework for mathematics
• Numbers and the number system including stages in progression in the development of understanding place value
• Mental calculation at KS1 involving the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• Recording calculations and the progression from mental to written calculations
• Planning and structuring a mathematics lesson
• Measurement including the measurement of length, weight, capacity and time in the KS1 curriculum

To plan a unit of work on measuring

The Science component includes:
• Develop personal knowledge of the science content: life processes in plants and animals, variation, classification and adaptation, forces and motion and friction, scientific enquiry
• The role of the National Curriculum and short term planning in Primary Science.
• Knowledge of the National Curriculum for Science and associated professional language.
• The structure and purpose of short term lesson planning, introduction to the three part lesson and creation of lesson plans
• Recognise the role of ICT in supporting teaching and learning

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching will be mainly through lectures and workshops. Individual/group tuition will be undertaken to support students’ subject knowledge.
