PEDA212 - National Curriculum Core 1: English, Mathematics and Science (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of English maths and science and related pedagogy to enable them to begin to teach effectively (Q14)

Content:

The English element of this module has a number of key strands.

First, it introduces language and reading comprehension with particular reference to 9-11 year olds and with implications for progression in literacy learning through Y7/8. A variety of teaching and learning contexts, strategies and resources are demonstrated and evaluated. Emphasis is placed on modeling effective classroom discourse within a variety of interactive teaching and learning strategies, techniques and routines including drama, talk partners etc. Guided reading is an instructional context demonstrated in considerable detail.

Second, the focus in on narrative texts such that students become aware of the various qualities of a rich literary heritage and the key features of the texts studied: mystery and adventure is one particular genre studied. Narrative in both book and multi-media form is addressed.

Third, students are required to compose their own episodes of narrative such that students gain mastery of the particular grammatical and structural features of narrative.

Fourthly, models of planning and assessment for formative purposes are demonstrated in preparation for school-based training.

The maths element of this module has a number of key strands

Introduction to the National Numeracy Strategy.
Consideration of the early development of number concepts. Developing a basic understanding of the number system.
Efficient methods for mental and written calculations, relating to addition and subtraction.
Introduction to elements of planning, pertinent to NNS.

The science element of this module has a number of key strands
Develop personal knowledge of the science content: life processes in plants and animals, variation, classification and adaptation, forces and motion, friction and air resistance
The role of the National Curriculum and short term planning in Primary Science.
Knowledge of the National Curriculum for Science and associated professional language.
The structure and purpose of short term lesson planning, introduction to the three part lesson.
Recognise the role of ICT in supporting teaching and learning
