PEDA192 - Teaching and Learning in the Foundation Stage 2 (Early Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained. (Q14)
(2) Begin to demonstrate knowledge of key principles across the Foundation Stage setting
(3) Begin to the analyse situations that relate to learning and development in the context of the Foundation Stage (A1)
(4) Work with others, as a result of the development of interpersonal skills, to demonstrate the capacity to plan, to share goals, and work as a member of a team (T4)

Content:

To have knowledge of the professional documentation associated with teaching in the Early Years.
Introduce the key principles and models of learning including the role of play that underpin the curricula for the Foundation stage
To have knowledge of children’s’ physical and cognitive development in the Early Years and how this relates to children’s learning
Explore the learning environment, common modes of organization and curriculum delivery in Foundation Stage settings
Recognise opportunities for the use of ICT in supporting children’s learning
Develop personal subject knowledge in relation to Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical development and Creative development
To understanding planning for the range of learning experiences within a Foundation Stage setting and associated college proforma.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis. Time allocated to each is appropriate to the module delivered eg. P.E. all workshop; professional studies workshop 50%, tutorial 50%.
