MFC5062 - Visual Effects and Motion graphics

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate the ability to report on and apply technical specifications relating to visual effects production
2. critically analyse the role of visual effects within the broad context of the film and TV industries.
3. evaluate strategies for digital post production within the visual effects industry
4. produce motion picture graphics.

Content:

The module provides a history of special visual effects production for film and television from its roots to present day info/entertainment to the move towards digital technologies. It examines the visual use of movement (animation) to effectively communicate static graphical textual information. It also explores issues of technical production, creative possibilities within film, TV, internet are discussed together with the constraints of: budget, bandwidth, experience, production time, facilities, location.

Theory will be applied to practical production in semester 2 where experience will be gained using a software package to create a title sequence using motion graphics for television or cinema.
