On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of concepts, theories and theorists and of their relevance to the area of study;
2. demonstrate an awareness of the political and ethical implications of the construction and use of knowledge;
3. critically mobilize these knowledges in the performance of cultural analysis;
4. demonstrate research and academic writing skills.
The module will build on the work done in MFC 1022 Analysing Media and Culture. It will explore further the ways in which the links between media, culture and society have been theorized. In particular it will focus on how knowledge is produced, validated and strategically mobilized. This will involve the problematizing of the research process. Throughout, students will be encouraged to practice and evaluate the material they are encountering by using it in the performance of analyses. Concepts studied will include post-structuralism, political economy, modernity, postmodernity, postmodernism, knowledge, representation and discourse. Subjects for analysis could include broadcasting, user-generated content, newspapers, identity, the public sphere and conflict.
