LMCM4063 - Research Methods for Practioners

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate knowledge of a range of research methodologies, their key features and applications
2 Evaluate critically the potential usefulness of various research methodologies to their professional environment
3 Critically evaluate appropriate research methods and design to meet the purposes of their professional circumstances

Content:

In this module students will engage with key debates related to quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and relate this to key data and research outcomes in their own profession.

Students will focus predominantly on the qualitative tradition and will evaluate methods most particularly:
• Case study and
• Action research for practitioners
and research techniques such as:
• Interviewing
• Questionnaires
• Observation
• Data analysis
As a result of this evaluation students will consider the most appropriate research method for their own research in the dissertation.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
